This ridged buckle is an enlargement of a surviving original in our private
collection. It is complete with an engraved buckle plate. It requires a pair
of rivets to secure it to the belt. According to Dress Accessories this
type of buckle had the greatest period of longevity of any in the medieval
period. The earliest examples were being thrown away as early as 1150 and as
late as 1450. They are called "ornate outside edge" buckles, and frequently
have projections, lobes, ridges or ears. For use on a 1 ½ inch or wider belt
and would be perfect for supporting a sword. Consider paring this with the
Large Strap End and the Brass Floral Belt Bar.
